Understanding Acne Skincare

There are several acne skincare treatments available, and finding the best options for your particular case will depend upon several factors. For women that are pregnant, certain medications should be avoided, since they have been linked to causing birth defects.

Teenagers that are seeking help for their particular type of acne may be allergic to certain medications, or may experience an allergic reaction to some topical essential oils. Even though some essential oils have been helpful for a number of skin conditions, some people may have negative reactions to them.

Many health professionals believe that in order to treat this condition effectively, a case study should be taken by a physician to determine the patient’s diet. Secondly, the doctor should analyze the individual’s emotional status to determine how well they react to daily stress in their life. Thirdly, appropriate tests should be taken to determine if the patient has any food allergies or any negative reactions to any medications. Once the results from these tests have been determined, then the doctor can proceed with an acne skincare approach tailored to that individual.

One medicine that has been successful with acne skincare treatment is Accutane.

Studies have shown that people who have taken this medication for a 4 to 5 month period have seen their acne symptoms clear up. Vitamin A is an important nutrient for our health, and this particular drug is a derivative of that vitamin. There are some side effects noted with Accutane (isotretinoin), and many doctors warn against using this drug during pregnancy since it is linked to causing birth defects. There are other antibiotics available to help treat this condition, such as tetracycline. Tetracycline is also advised not to be used during pregnancy since it may cause problems with bone formation in the unborn fetus.

A popular drug that has been added to many acne skincare medications is benzoyl peroxide.

You may have seen or heard commercials advertising a particular brand of medicated cream to help eliminate “zits”. This particular advertisement was targeted towards teenagers since that age group is heavily affected by this skin condition.

Before taking any medication, it is first necessary to discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of the medication they will prescribe. If the side effects encountered by the medication are greater than its benefits, then a different medication may be prescribed in its place.

The development of acne occurs when the pores in our skin which normally release oil become clogged.

When this happens, the bacteria inside the sebum will result in the formation of acne. To help treat this problem, benzoyl peroxide has been shown to be effective since it kills the bacteria in the clogged pores. Despite its benefits, it is not free of side effects.

For some people, this acne skincare medication may not cause any problems, while for others, symptoms such as redness, irritation and dry skin may result. In addition, a small percentage of people may develop more severe reactions. It may be best to test this medication on a small area of the skin to see if any adverse reactions may occur.

A very popular type of skin care formula that has been reported to be beneficial to the skin is the alpha hydroxy acids.

They have been an important discovery for anti aging skin care and are essentially natural chemical peels. These natural compounds have shown to be able to bring moisture to the skin and erase fine lines and wrinkles. Presently, some dermatologists are using these compounds for acne skincare treatment, since they have been found to help eliminate blackheads.

The AHA’S in skin care formulas are available in different strengths, and the higher the percentage of fruit acid in the formula, the greater the amount of irritation, redness, and skin flaking that may occur. Higher strength alpha hydroxy products are available only through a licensed dermatologist. Even though this treatment approach may be beneficial for some, certain types of acne will not respond well to this regimen.

Another type of natural organic acid that is used for acne skincare purposes is salicylic acid.

It is very similar to the AHA’s and may be more effective at treating certain types of acne. This compound is also known as a beta hydroxy acid, and it has been shown to be effective at ridding the excessive sebum and dead skin cells that reside in our pores.

In addition, they seem to be less irritating than the alpha hydroxys, and can also penetrate deeper into our skin cells. Because of this, doctors can prescribe a formula which contains a much higher concentration of the BHA’s since fewer negative reactions are likely to develop. If any side effects occur, they can be monitored by your doctor. They can then prescribe a skin cream which contains a smaller percentage of salicylic acid.

Many health authorities claim that one’s diet is not a factor in causing the condition of acne.

Other health experts have stated that there is no causal relationship between stress and acne, but that stress can exacerbate the condition. Some doctors use a more comprehensive approach in treating this problem by combining both conventional and alternative medicine.

There are millions of Americans that suffer from various blood sugar irregularities and some researchers claim that this problem may be associated with the development of acne. This health problem has been treated with different pharmacological agents, including insulin. Alternative health practioners have treated this health condition with various nutrients and herbs such as chromium, vanadium, alpha lipoic acid, fenugreek, and cinnamon. It is believed that when one’s blood sugar elevates, this will cause inflammation in our bodies. This, in turn, will result in a lowered immune response and certain health symptoms may arise, such as arthritis and an acne skincare condition.

Naturopathic physicians have used natural antiseptic herbs such as tea tree oil to help eliminate the bacteria which can causes an acne skincare condition.

It is important to find a source for this oil that is organically produced, so that herbicides and pesticides from non-organic products are not absorbed into our skin pores. There are a few good books on herbs, and two that I recommend are Planetary Herbology by Dr. Michael Tierra and Back to Eden by Jethro Kloss. Both books are very thorough and cover a wide variety of herbs. Dr. Tierra’s book also covers a lot of information on Chinese herbs. Dr. Kloss’s book, on the other hand, focuses mainly on American herbs.

The natural antibiotic herbs echinacea, goldenseal, lomatia, and osha have been used throughout history to treat bacterial infections.

In addition, there are blood purifying herbs and those that are used to help treat skin eruptions, such as burdock, yellow dock root, and red clover. The part of the burdock plant that has healing properties comes from the root. This medicinal plant’s root, when ingested, has a beneficial effect on our organs of elimination (our liver, lungs, kidneys and skin).

If these organs are not functioning properly, the toxins in our body cannot be effectively released. This problem will also cause inflammation and a build up of uric acid in our system. Our liver is responsible for eliminating the chemical substances that are bodies are subjected to from environmental and food toxins. When this and other channels of elimination are blocked, these toxic substances will travel to the pores of our skin. This, in turn, will cause our pores to clog causing an acne skincare condition.

A holistic approach in treating acne focuses on clearing our four channels of elimination so that all toxic substances can be effectively released from our bodies.

Historically, naturopathic physicians have used herbal and homeopathic medicines in combination with exercise and stress management techniques to help detoxify and clear our organs. In addition, they advocate a certain type of diet that excludes meats, dairy products, hydrogenated oils, fried foods, and processed sugar. Instead, one’s diet should include vegetable juices, fish, legumes, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and flax seed oil.

Essential oils have also been used and can be applied to acne lesions and scars. Some oils, such as oil of lavender, have been helpful for some people, but others should avoid this oil if they have experienced allergic reactions to it. Another compound that is topically applied to the skin for acne skincare treatment is camphor. It is beneficial since it helps bring circulation to the skin. This substance is either naturally produced by its extraction from an evergreen tree or it can be synthetically developed.

Many natural health practioners believe in the use of water therapy in the treatment of various health conditions.

This type of treatment is also known as hydrotherapy, and has been used as an acne skincare treatment. It involves the use of hot and cold baths in order to help treat inflamed and flaky skin. In addition, the use of a loofah sponge and/or skin brush is beneficial since it can help eliminate dead skin cells.

The condition of acne requires a multidisciplinary approach combining the best of conventional medicine with the addition of several alternative and complimentary therapies. In many cases, any disease or condition can be helped if combinations of healing systems are used. Consult with your holistic physician to determine the best combination acne skincare treatment possible to help you effectively deal with this condition.
