Botox Alternatives Show Promise In Treating Aging Skin

botox injection

There are several botox alternatives available today for people who want to treat aged facial skin. Over the years, plastic surgeons have developed different types of surgery techniques while cosmetic companies have developed various skin serums in the attempt to improve the quality of our skin. A major challenge in skin care is to eliminate the cosmetic appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin. Cosmetic surgeons have treated these problems by performing face lifts, eyelid surgery, tummy tucks, breast enhancement and reduction, and liposuction. Other physical conditions such as a protruding chin and cheek abnormalities are also best treated by surgery. These surgical procedures have been helpful in alleviating these problems, but there are a percentage of people who were not satisfied with the results. For this reason, people more than ever are seeking botox alternatives as a more natural way of caring for their skin.

Botox injections have their benefits but those who have any form of muscle disease should not consider this treatment.

Most of us have been warned about the danger of eating spoiled food due to the threat of botulism poisoning. This same bacterium clostridium botulinum toxin is injected into the skin in order to paralyze the facial muscles. This will produce a smoothing effect of the skin and help eliminate wrinkles. Also, this type of treatment must be repeated every few months since any benefits encountered last only a few months. If you don’t mind a trip to the doctor every few months, and the continual expense, this treatment may be right for you. Each treatment is generally priced at about $400.00. For those individuals who do not want to take on this financial burden, there are safe botox alternatives that you can consider.

Acupuncture began in China and uses tiny metallic needles which are placed in different parts of the skin.

In seeking any botox alternatives, it is important that they be somewhat effective, and safe and free of unwanted side-effects. One treatment that has been used for thousands of years for aging skin is acupuncture. This therapy holds the premise that the body has a vital energy known as qi (pronounced chee) and that, in an unhealthy person, there is a disturbance or blockage of this energy to pathways known as meridians. It has been used to treat many medical conditions, and it has shown promising results in alleviating pain and nausea associated with chemotherapy treatments.

Acupuncture stimulates the production of collagen causing a moisturizing of the skin.

For facial rejuvenation, acupuncture has been used by some, but not by all doctors of Oriental medicine. In an individual treatment, up to 40 needles are placed into the surface of the skin. Some patients have reported that deep lines on their face and forehead have been diminished, puffiness and bags under the eyes have been reduced, and several people have reported that they now appear several years younger. One treatment is not sufficient to help most skin problems. An individual’s skin type will not only determine how many needles are placed into the skin, but how many treatments are necessary. The mechanism of how acupuncture works for skin rejuvenation is that it stimulates one’s life energy (qi) so that the face will receive an increase in circulation. Also, it will smooth out facial lines, reduce wrinkles, and aid with sagging skin. Even though these results seem promising, there is no consensus from dermatologists and even from some acupuncturists as to its effectiveness. If you are considering this type of treatment, first seek out a licensed acupuncturist and ask to speak with some of their patients.

Collagen is a protein found naturally in our skin, and it diminishes with age.

botox treatment Of all the botox alternatives, collagen injections have been around since the early 1980’s and still continue to be used. For skin care purposes, collagen has been derived from cow skin, but recently approval was reached by the FDA to allow human collagen to be used by dermatologists. It is used to treat facial lines, wrinkles and also is used for lip enhancement. You may have seen reports on the news that there are some side effects from collagen injections. Because of this, some people have decided to purchase lip enhancement products over the counter. These products are said to contain vitamins and certain amino acids. Also, severe facial wrinkles and folds in the skin do not respond well to collagen injections, and many doctors may suggest other botox alternatives such as a facelift. It is important to consider all your options and to determine which type of treatment you can afford.

The newest type of treatment among botox alternatives is the use of light and multicolored light in the treatment of aging skin.

This type of treatment is called Photodynamic Therapy and uses a drug called a photosensitizer (cream) which is applied to the skin of the face, forehead, and neck. Afterwards pulsed white, blue, or red light is exposed to the patient’s skin. Studies have shown that this therapy has been effective in treating wrinkled skin. As far as side effects are concerned, there has been some stinging and swelling associated with its use. Since it is a new type of therapy, not enough information is known about its relative safety or if it has any additional side effects. Talk with your doctor to see if this will be a viable option in your case.

Of all the botox alternatives to come about is the use of a skin serum derived from peptides. Peptides are protein molecules and this skin serum is derived from a hexapeptide. This multi-peptide is a combination of 6 amino acids and is the basis for a skin formula marketed under the trade name Argireline. This skin serum causes the skin to relax, and as a result, will positively affect the skin by reducing lines and wrinkles. You may have seen products marketed throughout the internet containing this hexapeptide. They have been marketed under different company names, but all contain the ingredient acetyl hexapeptide-3. Many sites tout its effectiveness in combating wrinkles while another article I researched stated that its benefits were not conclusive and very few studies were done to evaluate its effectiveness. In this serum there is a 10% concentration of its main ingredient acetyl hexapeptide-3. It would best to consult with your dermatologist to see if this product will be beneficial to your case. When considering any of the above mentioned botox alternatives, it would be best to choose one which has the least amount of side effects associated with its use.
