Lesser Known Causes Of Dry Skin

The causes of dry skin are many and not everyone will be affected by them in the same way or to the same degree. Detailed in this article are some of the less commonly known causes of dry skin.

You may already know that the winter months of the year can be included on any list of causes of this problem, but did you know that the summer months can be just as aggravating? This is especially true if you live in warm climates where the humidity is low.

Many people are not aware of the role that central heating or central air conditioning can play on their flesh. Most heating and cooling units reduce the indoor humidity to levels that are not conductive to healthy flesh.

It may seem counterintuitive but long hot baths or hot showers are causes of dry skin too.

Spending a lot of time in hot water can break down the lipid barriers which can lead to problems. Swimming frequently in highly chlorinated water can lead to problems as well.

Consuming alcohol, caffeine, and certain drugs can also lead to problems with your hydration level.

Both alcohol and caffeine can be listed as causes of dry skin. The amount that is needed to be consumed before problems arise varies from person to person. If you have tried treatments and seen no results, check your intake levels of these products. It should also be noted that certain prescription medications such as diuretics, antihistamines, and isotretinoin will often be causes of dry skin.

Causes of dry skin, and natural products to help treat this condition

Common sense says that dehydration can lead to problems but did you know that you can become dehydrated from illness?

Vomiting, severe diarrhea, heavy sweating, and a high fever can all lead to dehydration if not enough fluids are put back into the body. These symptoms and resultant problems they can bring on is why we are told to "drink plenty of fluids" when we are ill. You should be aware that one of the best signs for dehydration is when the flesh begins to lose its appearance of elasticity.

Of course, dehydration can also occur by simply being outdoors on hot days or through exercise regimes. If you are sweating, for any reason, you need to increase your fluid intake, and the best fluid to use for this is water.

Other causes of this skin problem have to do with who we are. For example, the older we get the less active our oil glands become. When this happens we encounter problems with our flesh. The complexion can often become dull looking and be rough to the touch. With this reduction in oil we may also see what are known as scaly or flakey conditions.

Gender can play a role as well. There is some evidence that a male's flesh remains more hydrated into the latter years than a woman's. Most males will experience only a relatively small reduction in oil production until well into their 80's. Women, on the other hand, tend to become drier after they go through menopause.

As mentioned above, the causes of dry skin are many and it may take some time for you to narrow down the culprits in your life.

The above list is only a few of the issues that you may need to look into. One thing to keep in mind is that while most conditions can be treated through self-care, other conditions should be looked at by a doctor or dermatologist.

If you have been treating your condition and do not see any results you should visit with your physician and let him or her determine what the problem is and why it is not responding to treatments.

If your condition includes symptoms of severe itching you should see your doctor.

He or she may need to prescribe anti-itch medications to help relieve the symptoms. He or she will also want to narrow down the causes of dry skin in cases like this to make sure you are not suffering from an allergic reaction.

It is important to also see your doctor if you condition includes open wounds or open sores. This is also true if you have any signs of infection at that area.

Lastly, if you have large portions of your body that become scaly, you should visit with your physician and let him determine the causes of dry skin in these cases. This is true as well if you encounter large areas of peeling flesh.
